Montreux and Vevey Switzerland

I just finished resizing a bunch of pictures from our first day in Switzerland and was getting ready to post them when I realized that I hadn’t finished a post talking about our time in Switzerland.  So here is a quick rundown of a couple of our days there.  We spent one day on a nearby peak name Roches-de-Naye that gets its own post because it was just that cool.

Bottom line of it is that the southeastern tip of Lake Geneva in Switzerland is freaking incredible.  Vevey and Montreux are two small towns that sort of run together along the shore, and from what I’ve gathered they are sort of one of the posh resort areas to visit in Europe.  In a world of small economical cars, the Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Lotuses we saw there tended to stick out.  The best part of it was that its a very laid back, quiet area, which suited our needs perfectly.

Our first full day there we visited Chillon Castle and took a little trolley ride through some of the mountainside, lakeside vineyards.

Chillon Castle was one of the points of control for the Savoy family to control the region of France they controlled way back in the day.  The really cool thing about that castle is that it was built on a rock mass that was just off the shore of the lake.  While it probably made for a little bit of difficulty in building the castle, it made for some really great natural defense for maintaining control of the castle.  And after touring the castle itself, I wouldn’t say that the location adversely affected the ability of residents to live the medieval posh style one would expect from castle owners.

The vineyards were a really, cool experience as well.  Very different from the vineyards we experienced in Italy.  I didn’t know that this area was such a wine growing region, but there were vineyards all over along this section of the lake shore.  Our hotel greeted us with a complimentary bottle of local wine, so I know that in addition to making good wine the vineyards make for some wonderful scenery.

Our time in Switzerland was a bit more laid back than the rest of the trip which was nice.  It was more looking at amazing scenery than going and doing, so castle visit, vineyard trolley ride, and amazing sunset on the lake pretty much sums it up.
