Go See the Blind Side

I really don’t think I’m overstating it when I say that The Blind Side is one of the best movies that I’ve in quite some time.  I’ve always been a big fan of inspirational sports movies, and this one makes it towards the top of the list.

The story, based on the real life of Michael Oher is really a pretty incredible one.  In short, Oher goes from behind the homeless son of a crack addicted mother to a first round draft pick in the NFL.  He accomplishes this with the help of a wealthy family in town that takes him in out of the kindness of their hearts and truly makes him a part their family.

Though the story surrounds Oher, the movie follows Leigh Ann Touhey more closely as the central figure.  At least in the movie, she is the driving force behind bringing Michael into their home and into their family and helping him achieve the success he eventually finds.  I’m generally indifferent about Bullock as an actress, but I think she’s great in this one.  Most importantly, her thick Southern accent is good enough that it doesn’t make me want to kill myself like Anna Paquin’s in True Blood.

Tim McGraw plays the father in the Touhey family and I really think he does a great job.  I didn’t recognize him for a good portion of the movie, which is a good thing in my book.  The son in the family is really one of the gems of the movie.  If I’m being honest though, the writing is really one of the main stars of the movie.  Its very clever, with some great one liners, and it gives a lot of quality to the characters.

One of the craziest things about the story is that its true.  I can only wonder what Oher thinks when he watches the film and reflects back on his life.  Its really pretty incredible when you think about it, and I’m glad they decided to memorialize it in a movie.

  • I’m not saying that the Blind Side is a bad movie, but the next day I got herpes. So you be the judge. Then again, I did like the most recent Twilight movie, so I’m not sure how worthwhile my thoughts on movies are.

    • Yeah, thanks for that Jeff. Your insights are always so profound. And given that you liked the last Twilight movie, I’m not going to put a lot of value in your taste in movies.
