Pseudo Running Commentary on New Years Day College Football
Since I’m spending the day on the couch watching college football, I’ve decided to share in the experience. Instead of doing a “weekend review” post, I’m going to continually update this post through the day with observations and thoughts on the games I’m watching.
11:40 – Last update. This Sugar Bowl turned out to be completely anti-climactic for the day. I really wish the Rose and Sugar had been played in reverse order. Obviously, I wanted Florida to lose, but it looks like Cincy got exposed as pretenders and Tebow got his winning swan song. There are a handful of crappy bowls left through this week before the championship game, but I’ll probably end up watching at least a couple of those. Hope they’re at least a little more competitive than this one was.
7:43 – Not sure why I expected anything else, but this Rose Bowl is turning out to be a really good game. I guess I just didn’t think much of Ohio State, probably due to their bowl history over the last couple of years. Good back and forth game though. Seems like that’s the order of the day today.
4:35 – Wow, what a win. I can’t think of any better way for Bobby’s career to end. Huge, huge, huge. Also, thank you picture-in-picture for allowing me to watch the end of the FSU game while keeping tabs on what turned out to be a great Peen State – LSU game. And damn you CBS for crappy audio on your sideline reporter.
4:10 – Best commercial so far: Bud Light “Too Heavy, Too Light” paintball commercial
3:30 – How does Jarman Fortson drop a really easy pass early in the game and then make some of the ridiculous catches that he’s made since then? That one handed highlight reel we just saw a good example.
2:30 – Closer at the half than I thought it was going to be. FSU D has come up with a couple of really big plays to slow down the WV offense. The status of the WV quarterback could have a huge impact on the game, but don’t automatically assume that having the back up come in for him is going to win the game for FSU. I’ve seen many a game where an untested backup came in and won a game for his team.
The field for the Penn State-LSU game makes me think of a cattle pasture in Scotland or England.
2:01 – Noles dropped pass on third and five and missed field goal. Going to be a long day.
1:45 – Awesome touch to have Bobby throw the spear for his last game. Noles were hyped, but I have a real bad feeling how this one is going to go. I just don’t think we have the defense to stay in the game.
The field at the Capital One Bowl (Penn State – LSU) looks atrocious. Can’t say you should expect a very attractive game with a surface like that.
Gameday is weird without a crowd. Corso’s headgear moment is a little anti-climactic. It doesn’t have the same feel without the mix of boos and cheers. I do love me a retrospective montage though. Good way to finish out the show.
Last showing of College Gameday for a while. *wipes away a little tear*

I’m no FSU fan (too many years of seeing them trounce my ‘Hoos), but it was impossible not to love Bobby throwing that spear. Congrats on the big win!
