Lightning Over Dhaka

While I was in Delhi for work, they needed me to go to Dhaka, Bangladesh for a couple of days to deal with some stuff there.  There’s really not a lot to say about Dhaka, because its not the most exciting place in the world to go.  Bangladesh is one of the poorest countries in the world.  Its also one of the most densely populated.  Wikipedia says there are 13 million people in the city, but I also got estimates of closer to 16 million from people there.  Wikipedia also says there are somewhere in the neighborhood of 400k bicycle rickshaws operating in the city, which is noticeably lower than the 600-700k estimate our hosts gave us.

Another thing Wikipedia says is that Dhaka is a center of culture, education, and business in the region.  I’m not sure what region they’re talking about, but my only reaction to that is, “huh?’  From what I was told by our hosts we were in the “nicer” parts of Dhaka and it was pretty rough.  It really has to rank as one of the least nice places I’ve ever been in my life.  I’m really glad that I experienced it, but I won’t be sad if I never have to go back.  Oh, and for the sake of everything holy take bug spray, because I’ve never seen a collection of mosquitoes like they have there.

While there was no picture taking of Dhaka in general, I did try to take advantage of the surprise thunderstorm that cropped up one night to try something I’ve always wanted to try.  I’ve always wanted to try to photograph a thunderstorm using a long exposure time on my camera.  I took these from my hotel room and unfortunately the window was pretty dirty so I apologize for all of the spots, but I think they turned out kind of cool nonetheless.
