College Football Weekend Rewind

This was kind of a crap weekend for football.  There were a number of decent games, but none of them went the way I wanted.

First, the quick and dirty.  How does Oregon take USC behind the woodshed last week and then lose to Stanford, of all people, yesterday?  That’s just embarrassing.

While we’re on the subject of embarrassing, Notre Dame lost to Navy again.  Now, Navy isn’t terrible, but Notre Dame has been playing respectably this year and they should be able to handle Navy at home.

To rattle off a couple more scores that shouldn’t have been, Michigan lost to Purdue at home, Oklahoma lost to Nebraska, and Cal lost to Oregon St.

The crap game to cap off the weekend was FSU’s loss to Clemson.  Now, if I’m honest I never really expected for us to win, but with our offense playing the way it had been I was harboring some dreams of a miracle.  Again, FSU gave me some hope, only to dash that hope in the end.

I knew that they would gouge us for big plays like they did, especially with CJ Spiller in their backfield.  What I didn’t expect was for Christian Ponder to have his worst game of the season.  There is a positive way to look at his performance in that his numbers were still pretty good in terms of yards and completions.  So even with a disastrous four interception performance, it wasn’t a complete meltdown.

Basically, what we can take from this is if our defense isn’t a complete nightmare next year, even on bad days our offense could still be decent enough to get the job done.  As it is now, our season is pretty much over.  Ponder is injured, possibly for the rest of the season, and Mickey Andrews is retiring at the end of the season.  Our chances of making a bowl game are pretty much nil at this point, which pains me to say, and while I’ll keep watching games, here’s hoping for a better run next season.

College Football Weekend Review

Cris and I weren’t around the house last weekend so there wasn’t any CFB weekend review, but I was back in the college football saddle this weekend and it turned out to be a very good one.

I’ll go ahead and get this out of the way.  We only had one missed game between Cris and I this weekend in College Pick’Em.  Of course it would be me that would miss the game.  Cris continues her hot streak and I’m not sure there is any chance of me catching up to her for the season.  She’s sitting around the 93rd percentile and I’m ten points back in the 87th.

Florida State played alright this weekend against what quickly became a beat up Va Tech team.  Their starting quarterback and one of my biggest concerns for the game, Tyrod Taylor, went down in the first play with a pretty tweaked up ankle.  Then later in the game their backup, Sean Glennon, who started at the beginning of the season went down with a messed up ankle as well.  Hats off to the third stringer, who hadn’t really played quarter back…well, ever at Va Tech came in and did a pretty respectable job considering the situation.

Florida State’s defense was pretty stout, but I don’t think our offense was very consistent or impressive.  Our O-line struggled a bit more this game than we have the last couple of weeks.  We weren’t really able to get our running game going and our pass protection didn’t survive Va. Tech’s defensive line very well.  Just looking at the statistics.  Offensively, for both teams this was a pretty mundane performance.

In the end we came out of it with a “W” and that’s the critical element.  We’ve now put ourselves in the driver’s seat to win the Atlantic Division of the ACC, as Wake Forest lost this weekend.

HUGE, HUGE win for UGA this weekend over LSU.  I didn’t get to watch this game as closely as I’d like since FSU was playing at the same time, but man there were some huge plays.  I’ll use this game to start out my copying of ESPN in handing out helmet stickers.  Each week ESPN analysts and bloggers hand out theoretical helmet stickers for a good performance, like many schools actually do for their players.  Thinking through the weekend, this seemed like a good idea so here goes.

First one goes out to Darryl Gamble who opened and finished the scoring for Georgia with interceptions returned for touchdowns.  He also had 13 tackles on the game while filling in for the injured starting MLB.

This one is painful but I have to give credit where credit is due.  Second sticker goes to Florida’s kick coverage teams for 2 blocked punts and a blocked field goal Saturday.  Some teams don’t block three kicks in a season and they did it in one game.  I hope they suck next week. GO DAWGS!

An finally, we have one going to Duke for their win in the IQ bowl.  Duke played Vanderbilt in a game where I’m betting the average IQ for the players on the field was probably rivaling that of an Ivy league game.  They’re also getting this sticker for matching their win total for the last four seasons on Saturday.  Let’s hope they can get a couple of more and actually get to a bowl game this year.

Florida State has Georgia Tech next week, which should make for an interesting game.  Ga Tech’s new coach, Paul Johnson, brought the option from Navy this year, but they’ve been successfully passing much more than anyone anticipated so far this season.  It will be very interesting to see how our defense matches up with their offense.

UGA’s game is one of the biggest in college football.  Both teams are ranked in the top ten, and after last year’s game, there is no doubt UF is going to be pumped for the game.  I don’t think there is any doubt that UGA will be up for the game as well.  I just hope that we’re able to take momentum from Baton Rouge to Jacksonville and that there isn’t a letdown for this game.  We go in with anything less than our best and they’ll kill us.

College Football Weekend Review

These are the kinds of college football weekends that I live for.  Wins by almost all of the teams I wanted to win and really close games that were fun to watch.  On top the great games, my College Pick’Em went really well this weekend too.

- Nice solid win from FSU this weekend.  Another cupcake of a team, but we handled the game the way we should have.  I actually got to watch this one, which I’m definitely happy about.  The offense looked really solid through the first half of the game.  I’m pretty please with what I saw from Christian Ponder.  I totally hate the situation for Drew Weatherford, because he’s done everything a coach could ask for, but he just hasn’t shown that he’s the best players to lead the noles.  I don’t think the offense ran as smoothly under Richardson in the second half, but they obviously continued to put point on the board so can’t complain too much.

- The UGA game was nuts.  Ugly win, but I’ll take it.  They always say to win championships you have to able to find a way to win when you’re not playing your best.  UGA did that this weekend, but let’s hope they don’t make a habit of it.  I have to give credit to USC’s defense who played pretty well.  I also have to admit that it was very satisfying to see Steve Spurrier all frustrated and flustered.  I’ve disliked him ever since his days at Flordida.

- The last game that we really watched was the end of the Oregon game.  Didn’t really care about that game except that I had alot of Pick’Em points riding on it.  First, congrats and well done to Oregon, which lost two quarterbacks during the game.  I also have to give a nod to the Oregon coaching staff, who made great play calls in the second overtime to win with a quarterback who had just stepped into the game.  On the other side of things, I feel terrible for the kicker for Purdue.  I badly missed a field goal at the end of the game that, if I remember correctly, would have won it, and then missed another one in overtime that could have sealed the win.  That’s a really rought way to go out.

- Pick’Em progress was good.  Eight for 10 on my picks and the two that I missed were my two lowest point total games.  I’m up to the sevent-seventh percentile and making pretty good progress.  Hope that trend continues.

FSU has their first big test next weekend against Wake Forest, who many pundits picked to make it to the ACC championship game.  We’ll see if any of the good play during our first two games wasn’t simply because we were playing terrible teams.  Georgia travels to Arizona next week.  Not sure how this game is going to be.  I think Arizona was supposed to be a pretty good test, but I think they lost to a less than impressive team this weekend, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
